Obituary of Evelyn V. Smith

Mrs. Evelyn V. Smith, 90, of Clinton Road, Canajoharie, New York died Friday, July 17, 2015 at the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. Born on September 23, 1924 in Lexington, NY, she was the daughter of Neal VanValkenburgh and Isabelle Kinch VanValkenburgh. She attended Lexington area schools and spent most of her life in the Canajoharie area. Mrs. Smith was a Lab Technician for LifeSavers in Canajoharie for over 30 years, retiring in 1987. She was of Catholic faith. Mrs. Smith enjoyed camping, traveling, and golf. She was a former member of the Kurly-Q Square Dance Club. On April 22, 1944 at the former St. Peter's & Paul's Catholic Church Evelyn was married to John F. Smith. Together they celebrated 48 years of marriage, until his death on August 22, 1992. Her son, Baby Smith; sisters, Hattie Hogan, Mary Ellen Croce, Mina Sweet; and brother, Ira VanValkenburgh predeceased her. Mrs. Smith is survived by her sons, Edward J. and Laura Smith of Whitesboro, NY, Dennis E. Smith of Canajoharie, NY; brothers, Lewis and Virginia VanValkenburgh of Fort Plain, NY, Hugh and Delores VanValkenburgh of Hartwick, NY; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at Noon at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 10:00-12:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in St. Peter's & Paul's Catholic Cemetery in Canajoharie. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mrs. Evelyn V. Smith may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Memorial & Honor Program-F, 501 St. Jude Place, TN 38105-1905 or to a Charity of one's choice.
