Obituary of Michael Sanford Barnes

Mr. Michael Sanford Barnes, 61, of Canal Street, Fort Plain, New York died Friday, October 23, 2015 in Palatine Bridge, unexpectedly. Born on June 21, 1954 in Cooperstown, NY, he was the son of the late Sanford J. Barnes and Vera Russo Barnes. He was a graduate of Cooperstown High School, Class of 1973 and had been a resident of the Fort Plain area since the early 1980s. Mr. Barnes worked in the Maintenance Department and as a Night Cleaner at Beech-Nut in Canajoharie and Amsterdam for over 30 years. He was of Catholic faith. Mr. Barnes was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #853 of Canajoharie, and the Boiling Pot Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles #3846 of Canajoharie. He enjoyed playing cards at The Moose. He bowled in his younger years and enjoyed hunting. In addition to his parents, his brother, Timothy Barnes, predeceased Michael in 1989. Mr. Barnes is survived by his 2 sons, Shawn Michael Barnes and wife, Kieren of Amsterdam, NY, Adam Gregory Barnes of Potsdam, NY; their mother, Crystal A. Barnes of Fort Plain, NY; brother, Robert Matthew and Julie Barnes of Cooperstown, NY; sisters, Cynthia Arnold and William of Rock City Falls, NY, Jo Ann Barnes of Oneonta, NY; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 10:00 AM at The Chapel of Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY with Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 5:00-8:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Cooperstown, NY. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mr. Michael S. Barnes may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Memorial & Honor Program-F, 501 St. Jude Place, TN 38105-1905.
