Mr. Doward Hoes, 90, of West Street, Fort Plain, New York died of a short illness, Saturday, December 5, 2015 at St. Mary's in Amsterdam, surrounded by family.
Born on December 12, 1924 in Yorkville, NY, he was the son of Edward Hoes and Frances Mulkins Hoes. He was a 1942 graduate of Whitesboro High School. He entered into the US Army in December 1942, obtaining a rank of Master Sergeant. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea. On October 7, 1950, Doward was married to Lois Hakes in Whitesboro, NY. Together they celebrated over 65 years of marriage. He retired from his last job at NYS DOT in Utica where he was a machinist. Mr. Hoes had been a resident of Fort Plain since 2003, previously residing in Marcy, NY. Doward was a member of the Fort Plain Reformed Church. He was also a member of the American Legion #229, and Malsan-Jones VFW Post #7393. He used to enjoy their camp on O'Kara Lakes with special friends Marvin and Doris Clinch and camping and traveling around the country in their RV. He was a master carpenter and loved woodworking for family and friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, Harold Hoes, and sisters, Thelma Stinson, and Clestner Sharp. Mr. Hoes is survived by his wife, Lois Hoes of Fort Plain, NY; daughter, Susan (Steve) Demick Fort Plain, NY; 2 sons, Gary(Deb) Hoes of Lakeside, MT and Bryan(Chris) VanHoose of Harwich, MA; grandchildren, Beth(Mike) Dezolt, Sheri(Chris) Shephard, Lindsey Palmer, Meghen VanHoose and Michael VanHoose along with the blessing of his great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. They all brought such joy in his life.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 11, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Fort Plain Reformed Church, with Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 10:00-11:00 am at the Church. Burial will take place on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 10:00 am, on his 91st birthday, at Carr Cemetery, 6131 Route 291, Marcy, NY, with Military Honors at graveside.
