Obituary of Leonard J. Van Schaick

Mr. Leonard J. Van Schaick, 83, of Galway Road, Ballston Spa, New York died Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 23, 1933 in Flat Creek, NY, he was the son of Jay W. Van Schaick and Louisa Soden Van Schaick. He was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, Class of 1951. Mr. Van Schaick spent most of his life in Rural Grove, moving to Ballston Spa in 1992.
Mr. Van Schaick retired from Syrstone in 2000. He was also the Owner and Operator of Van Schaick Trucking.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War and obtained a rank of PVT.
On April 15, 1961 at the First Reformed Church in Rochelle Park, NJ, Leonard was married to Lois J. Bode. Together they celebrated over 55 years of marriage.
His sister, Dorothy Van Schaick and brother, Francis Van Schaick predeceased him.
Mr. Van Schaick is survived by his wife, Lois Van Schaick of Ballston Spa, NY; daughter, Linda and Bill Nare of Fonda, NY; son, Jay and Linda Van Schaick of West Milford, NJ; brother, George Van Schaick of Schenectady, NY; grandchildren, Joshua Nare, Isaiah Nare and his wife, Hailey, Jeremiah Nare and his wife, Jennette, Hannah Gies and her husband, Joshua, Jay Van Schaick, Anna Van Schaick, Rachael Van Schaick; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Rebecca; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 11:00am at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with Pastor David Prahst officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, January 15, 2017 from 3:00-6:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring at Charleston Four Corners Cemetery with Full Military Honors at graveside.
