Mr. Delbert "Del" Becker, 88, of McKinley Road, Palatine Bridge, New York died Thursday, January 19, 2017 at St. Mary's Healthcare of Amsterdam.
Born on June 6, 1928 in the Town of Sharon, NY, he was the son of Oscar Eugene Becker and Ella Hogabone Becker. He attended various country schools and was a lifelong area resident.
On September 8, 1948 at the Methodist Church in Ilion, NY, Delbert was married to Elizabeth "Betty" Krutz.
At the start of their marriage Del worked as a farmer. He spent a brief time working for NY Central Railroad then purchased Becker's Texaco Gas Station in Fort Plain. From there Mr. Becker got involved in used car sales and salvage opening Becker's Auto Salvage, Inc. in 1973. Del was a hard worker all his life. The longtime family saying was that "if there were 8 days in a week, we would work all 8." He took great pride is his family business, often traveling to Florida to buy cars and parts to continue the business' growth.
He was of Christian faith.
Mr. Becker was a member of the NRA. He enjoyed working and talking to people. He loved driving anything, although driving tractor trailers were among his favorite.
His son, Richard "Rick" Becker predeceased him on April 17, 2013. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Oscar Becker, Jr., Edward "John" Becker; and sisters, Mildred and Virginia.
Mr. Becker is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Becker of Palatine Bridge, NY; son, Skip and his wife, Brenda Becker of Palatine Bridge, NY; sisters, Leona Cook of Fort Plain, NY, Elsie Holliday and her husband, David of Florida; grandsons, Ricky and Sherry Becker of Palatine Bridge, NY, Delbert Becker, Jr. of Palatine Bridge, NY; great-grandson, Bryson Becker; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 2:00pm at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, January 23, 2017 from 4:00-7:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring at Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Little Falls, NY.
