Obituary of Wayne J. Horning

Mr. Wayne J. Horning, 71, of Maple Avenue, Canajoharie, New York died Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at his home, following a brief illness, with his beloved wife by his side. Born on March 25, 1944 in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of Beverly C. Horning and Alice M. Gordon Horning. He was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, Class of 1963 and attended Cobleskill College. He was a life long resident of Canajoharie. Mr. Horning was an Electrician for Beech-Nut in Canajoharie for 42 years. He also had been a shop steward, and began his career at LifeSavers. He was a member of the Aldersgate Free Methodist Church. Mr. Horning was an active and dedicated member of the Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department for 33 years. He loved hunting and was an avid fan of the Yankees and the Giants. In his younger years he enjoyed playing sports. On May 29, 1968 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie, Wayne married Cheryl Baker. Mr. Horning's only child, Kristina Marie Horning predeceased him on July 20, 1991. Mr. Horning is survived by his wife, Cheryl B. Horning of Canajoharie, NY; brothers, Richard H. Horning and Vicki of Tacoma, WA, Larry C. Horning and Sandy of Reno, NV; sister, Bonnie K. Handy and Duff of Bleecker, NY; brothers-in-law, Jeff and Jill Baker of Canajoharie, NY, Doug Baker of Watervliet, NY; sisters-in-law, Diane Baker of FL, Barbara Baker of St. Johnsville, NY; 3 very special nephews, Jason, Josh, and Jordan Baker and Caitlin; great-nephew and great-niece, Henry and Ceci, who he thought the world of; several nieces, nephews, cousins. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 1:00pm at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Wayne A. Cole officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 11:00-1:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda, NY.
