Mrs. Beatrice J. Haig Florio, 96, passed away peacefully with the comfort of loving family members at her side on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the Palatine Nursing Home where she had resided for over four years.
Beatrice, the daughter of Glenn W. Haig and Gertrude Mallett Haig, was born on February 2, 1912 in Brooklyn, NY.
Mrs. Florio attended Sharon Springs School. She was baptized at the Episcopal Church in Sharon Springs.
On July 15, 1943 Beatrice was united in marriage with Amelio Florio at Christ Church in Cooperstown. They resided in New Haven, CT for many years. After Amelio passed away on February 2, 1973, Beatrice returned to her home area and resided on Rock Street in Canajoharie for close to 30 years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Beatrice was predeceased by her four brothers, Earnest, Leland, Cassius and Harry Haig; sister, Gladys Houghtaling; and a cousin Bernice Haig Glenn.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Arlene Haig of Ballston Lake and Margaret Florio Glenn, a resident of the Palatine Nursing Home. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Florio worked as a nurse's aide at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. During World War II, she worked at Beech-Nut Packing Company. While living in Connecticut, and following her return to New York, she was a caregiver. Beatrice was a caring and loving person, and was happiest when she was doing for others. She enjoyed taking long walks and visiting the library. Beatrice was interested in genealogy, and always enjoyed family gatherings.
