Mr. Elton L. "Al" Mattice, 82, of Oswegatchie Road, Palatine Bridge, New York, died Thursday morning, April 16, 2009 at his home.
Born on December 4, 1926 in the Town of Stamford, NY, he was the son of Charles Raymond Mattice and Mary Alice Mackey Mattice. He was a graduate of Schenectady High School. He had been a resident of the Palatine Bridge area for the past 5 years, previously residing in Margaretville, NY.
Mr. Mattice was employed with GLF, which became Agway Petroleum for 40 years, retiring in 1992.
He was of Protestant faith.
Mr. Mattice served in the US Army during World War II, as an aerial photographer.
He was a volunteer fireman in Margaretville for many years. Mr. Mattice was a member of the American Legion Post #1785 in Margaretville and a past Boy Scout Master for Troop #80. He enjoyed hunting and bowling.
On August 19, 1950 he was married to Katherine Russell at the bride's home in Bovina Center, NY. She preceded him in death on January 21, 2005.
Mr. Mattice was also predeceased by a brother, Burton Mattice and sisters, Alice Butler and Mary Mattice.
He is survived by his sons, Russell and Pam Mattice of Palatine Bridge, NY, Roger and Ginny of Winston-Salem, NC; sisters, Dorothy Johns of Cobleskill, NY, Leona Alexander of Margaretville, NY, Freda McCumber of Port St. Lucie, FL, Leta Hyers of Caudia, NH; brother, Clifford Mattice of Greenwich, NY; 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
