Mrs. Helene "Lena" Palm, 99, formerly of Canal Street, Fort Plain, New York, died Friday evening, May 8, 2009 at Palatine Nursing Home, Palatine Bridge, New York.
Born August 31, 1909, in Swampscott, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of John and Saturnina Evangelisti Bufalini. She was educated at English High School in Lynn, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Palm has been an area resident since 1926 when she moved here from Lynn, Massachusetts. She assisted her husband in the operation of Palm's Grocery and Produce in Canajoharie, New York and was the general manager of the former Fort Plain Discount Fabric Shop. She was co-owner of the former Towpath Discount Bridal & Fabric Shop and she was the owner and proprietor of Palm's Apartments in Fort Plain, New York.
Mrs. Palm was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Fort Plain, New York where she was the church organist and member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was formerly the Choir Director for the Jr. Newman Choir Club of St. James Church and member of the St. James Church Adult Choir. Mrs. Palm was the founder of the Gay Nineties Woman's Softball Team, founder of the Youth Girls' Softball Team, the Debs, and she sponsored the creation of the baseball field in Fort Plain.
On October 21, 1928, she married John Palm at Sts. Peter & Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Canajoharie, New York. He pre-deceased her on January 9, 1990.
Mrs. Palm is survived by her daughter, Barbara J. Palm, AKA Barbara J. Palma of Tucson, Arizona, her sister, Rose June Serino of Danvers, Massachusetts, several nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews and a great-great-great nephew.
