Mr. Lester D. Dygert, 80, of Eaker Road, Fort Plain, NY, passed away unexpectedly at his home.
Lester graduated from Canajoharie High School and lived most of his life locally.
For almost 45 years, he worked at Beech-Nut in Canajoharie, NY, and retired when they moved to Amsterdam. He was also a well-known handyman, often called upon by many for his plumbing skills in the local area.
Lester had served as a US Marine during the Vietnam War.
He was of Methodist faith and a member of the Johnstown Moose, Fort Plain VFW, BPOE Eagles, and Canajoharie. When he was younger, he enjoyed farming and riding his motorcycle. Most of all, Lester enjoyed sitting and talking with people; a small job fixing a kitchen sink may have taken 15 minutes with Lester's skills. His customers were bewildered by his extremely reasonable bill, but the time he spent with people afterward was his reward.
On October 5, 1974, at the Canajoharie United Methodist Church, he married Janet Introne, she predeceased him in death on January 11, 2015.
He was preceded by his brothers Donald, Robert, Raymond, Jerry, Jack Dygert and his sisters Margie and Dorothy.
He is survived by his three daughters, Shelly and her husband Abel Rivera, Jr., Janette and her husband Timothy Frederick, and Lyndsai and her husband Stanley Chesebro; six grandchildren, Conner, Cameron, Christopher, Tamara, Reba, and Tyler; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday, September 29, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 at Houghtaling and Hanley Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 30, 2024, at 10:00 at the funeral home, with burial following at Freysbush Cemetery. —Rev—James "Jim" Peck officiating.
