Karl "Skip" Swartz, Jr., 65, of State Route 80, Fort Plain, NY, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on the early evening of January 24, 2024.
Karl was born on March 27, 1958, in Little Falls, NY, the son of Karl S. Swartz, Sr and Marjorie I. Smith Swartz.
In 1976, Karl graduated from Fort Plain High School and lived his entire life in the local area.
He enjoyed working at the family farm, Stone Bottom Farm, and as a herdsman at many area farms. He also was employed at the Walmart Distribution Center, from which he retired in 2020.
Karl was an active member of the Canajoharie Fort Plain Elks Lodge, # 2621, where he held many offices and supported the lodge through many hours of work in any place he was needed to make sure everything went like it was supposed to. He was past exalted ruler and elk of the year among his many honors. When he was younger, he enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, and softball. Everyone who knew him knew of his generosity towards others but knew his world revolved around his family, with a special place for his daughter and grandson, Carter.
On August 27, 1983, at the Marshville Evangelical Church, he married the former Nancy Blair, who survives.
His parents predeceased him as well as his sister, Sandra L. Swartz, who passed away in 1959.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy K. Swartz; daughter Nicki and her husband, Mark Hubal; sisters Vicki and her husband, Donald Lambert and Sally and her husband, Andrew Smith; his grandson Carter Hubal; his loving K-9 companion Baily; and several nieces nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 4:00-6:00 PM on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Houghtaling and Hanley Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. The Elks will perform their service at 6:00 PM, followed by a memorial service with Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating. After the memorial service, everyone will be welcomed at the Canajoharie Fort Plain Elks Lodge, Old Station Rd, Nelliston, NY 13410. Burial will take place at Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.
