Obituary of Robert W. Slater

Robert "Bob" Slater Mr. Robert "Bob" Slater, 66, of Old Route 10, Canajoharie, New York passed away early Saturday Morning, Saturday 26, 2016, following a long battle with cancer at St. Mary's Healthcare. Born on February 20, 1950 in Cobleskill, NY, he was the son of the late Donald and Juanita Partridge Slater. He was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School and was a lifetime area resident. Robert worked at Medical Linen in St. Johnsville for many years, as well as WW Custom Clad for a short time. Mr. Slater then went to work for Pioneer Windows in Johnstown, NY, until his retirement. Mr. Slater served in the US Military. Bob was a veteran of the US Army National Guard 10th Mt. Division. He also enlisted in the general reserves, and then enlisted in the US Marine Corp. He was a diesel and auto repair mechanic. In 1971 Bob became a lifetime member of the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post #3275 and also served on the VFW Memorial Squad. He loved the outdoors, watching NASCAR and football. He was an avid fisherman and loved to cook on the grill. He also loved playing horseshoes and fixing things. His sister, Linda Andrilla and granddaughter, Marissa Williams predeceased him. Mr. Slater is survived by his children, Dawn (Henry) Williams of Canajoharie, NY, John Slater, II of Fort Plain, NY; girlfriend, Vicki Oyer of Canajoharie, NY; brothers, Francis (Louisa) Slater of Canajoharie, NY, Harry Slater of St. Johnsville, NY; sister Edna (Robert) Andrews of Fort Plain, NY; grandchildren, Keisha Williams, Collin Williams, Devon Russell, Donald Slater, Dayton Slater; as well as many nieces, and nephews and cousins. The Fort Plain VFW Memorial Squad will have a military (gun) salute to honor Robert at Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY on Thursday March 31th after visitation, which will take place from 10am-12noon. Entombment will take place at Gerald B. Solomon cemetery at a later date.
