Obituary of Myron S. Saltsman

Mr. Myron S. Saltsman, 89, of Waddell Avenue, For t Plain, New York, died, early Thursday morning, April 1, 2010 at the Mountain Valley Hospice House in Gloversville.
Born on June 7, 1920 in Fort Plain, NY, he was the son of Jermiah Saltsman and Buelah White Saltsman. He graduated from Fort Plain High School in June 1938 and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Saltsman worked for the NYS Barge Canal, retiring as Chief Lock Operator at Lock #15 in Fort Plain in 1981 after 30 years.
From January 1942 until December 1945, Mr. Saltsman served in the U.S. Army with the European Theater 9th Armored Division, obtaining the rank of Private First Class.
He was a member of the Fort Plain United Methodist Church. He served on the board of Trustees as treasurer for the Church and was a member of the Church Pairs and Spairs Club.
Mr. Saltsman served as a neighborhood commissioner of Sir William Council Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post #3275, Fort Plain American Legion Post #554, serving as Commander of the Post at one time, member of the Fort Hunter Canal Society, Heritage & Genealogical Society of Montgomery Co. He served on the board of Trustees for the Mohawk Valley Library Association, Fort Plain Free Library, and Fort Plain Museum. Mr. Saltsman was a member of the Nautical Research Guild, NYS Archaeological Association, Van Epps Hartley Chapter.
On June 22, 1946 in Fort Plain, NY, he was married to June F. Wells. She preceded him in death on November 15, 1994. He is also predeceased by his sister, Ruth J. Schmidttman .
Mr. Saltsman is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends, including his good friend, Betty Schell.
