Mr. John Joseph Toomey, Jr., 86, of W. Ames Road, Town of Canajoharie, NY, passed away at home unexpectedly late Sunday evening, October 23, 2022. He was born in Flushing, NY the son of John and Mary Toomey.
Mr. Toomey went to Public School 69 and St. Joan of Arc. He graduated from Rhodes School in NYC class of 1954, then he obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine, Orono, ME class of 1958. Following college, he served for two years in the US Army, stationed in Monterey, CA.
Starting in January 1961, he was the owner and operator of Naja Farms, until his son took it over in 2018.
He was a communicant of the former St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church of Canajoharie, as well as a current member of Our Lady of Hope, Fort Plain. He was also past president of the Ames Vol. Fire Dept, a member of the Fort Rensselaer Club, Trustee of the VanAlstyne Society, past president of the Glen Milk Producers Co-Op, Member of the Mohawk Valley Farm Bureau, Past Director of the Cherry Valley Insurance Company, past Boy Scout Leader, as well as a past Councilman for the Town of Canajoharie for 11 terms, serving over 40 years in that capacity.
On August 29, 1959, he married Nancy Schmidt.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Schmidt Toomey; children Karen and her husband Tony Sylvester, John J. and his wife Cheryl Toomey, and Kathleen Bowerman; Grandchildren AJ Sylvester, Joe Toomey, Charlotte Sylvester, Morgan Trahan and her husband Gordon Trahan, Nicholas Toomey, and Madison Koelbl; sister Joan Chadwick and brother Philip Toomey, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John was predeceased by his parents and son-in-law Eric Bowerman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday October 29th, 2022, at 11:00am at Our Lady of Hope, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY, 13339. Burial will follow at Ames Cemetery.
