Obituary of Richard Leland Monk

Richard Leland Monk, 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in Ocala, Florida on April 5th 2016. He was born May 10, 1943 in Amsterdam, New York, to the late Alton and Dorothy (Darrow) Monk. He was raised on his family farm in Sprakers NY. He was a graduate of Canajoharie High School. Richard owned and operated Syrstone and North Syracuse Construction companies in NY. He was a long time member of the Sprakers Reformed church where he served as an elder and vice president. Richard aka (Dick Monk) was loved and cherished by his family and friends. He was the king of 4th of July. For many years his family, close friends and community members gathered for his grand 4th of July celebrations that ended with a beautiful display of fireworks. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and nascar. He is survived and loved by his devoted wife of 38 years, Terri (Hinderliter) Monk. Daughters Robin (Monk) Jusenius, Stacey (Monk) Kamp, Son Richard (Butch) Monk Jr. Grandchildren Adam Krutz, Amber (Jusenius) Chamberlain, Heather Monk, Alicia Jusenius, Thea Barber, Tabatha Monk, Courtney Monk, Danyell Monk, Rachel Kamp and seven precious Great Grandchildren. Sisters Carol Slater, Diane Reynolds, and Cynthia Jones. Brothers Edward Monk and Alton Monk Jr. Richard was predeceased by his son Troy Allen Monk and brother Rodger Monk. A memorial service will be held at the Sprakers reformed church on Saturday, May 7th 2016 at 11:00 am. The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the memorial service, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his honor to the Sprakers Reformed Church, Shriners Hospital, or Rhett's Syndrome Research Foundation.
