Mrs. Lelah Lou Stam, 87, most recently of Caroga Lake, New York died Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at St. Johnsville Rehab & Nursing Center, following a brief illness.
Born on November 6, 1929 in Nelliston, NY, she was the daughter of Harry Hollenbeck and Katherine Doxstader Hollenbeck. She was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, Class of 1937 and was a lifetime local area resident; spending summers and weekends at Caroga Lake and winters in Florida, for the past 11 years.
She was a member of St. John's & St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie.
Mrs. Stam was a member of the DAR, the Canajoharie American Legion Auxiliary, and the Johnstown Moose Lodge #1185. She loved "baking in the sun", traveling, being outdoors, and going out to eat.
On June 23, 1951 at her parent's home, Lelah was married to Everett E. Stam. Together they celebrated over 53 years of marriage. Everett preceded her in death on June 21, 2005. Her nephew, Michael Douglas also predeceased her.
Mrs. Stam is survived by her sister-in-law, Eileen Douglas and her husband, Gerald of Fort Plain, NY; nieces and nephews, Sandra Douglas Schmidt and her husband, Michael, Mark Douglas and his wife, Eunice, Eric Douglas and his friend, Lisa, Melissa Douglas and her son, Jacob, Gerald Douglas, Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, all of Fort Plain, NY, Jody Douglas of Ilion, NY; lifetime friends, Bob and Doreen Attridge, Greg and Linda Lott, Laura and Paul Labota.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017 at 11:00am at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday from 10:00-11:00am at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Maple Ave. Cemetery in Fultonville, NY.
