Mrs. Sandra VanWie, 78, of Honey Hill Road, Fort Plain, New York passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, NY following a short illness. Born on August 5, 1942 in Ilion, NY, she was the daughter of stepfather, William Bufford Sr. and mother, Helene Chatterton Hall.
She was a graduate of Gloversville High School. She attended SUNY Cobleskill College and was a lifetime area resident. Sandy was employed with Lexington, Beech-Nut and Life-Savers, and Temper Corp.
On July 18, 1964 in Gloversville, NY, Sandy was married to Alan VanWie. Together they celebrated over 51 years of marriage.
Sandy was very active with the Girl Scouts of America, and the Fort Plain Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was an avid NASCAR racing fan and was involved with various drum and bugle corps. She enjoyed spending time with her husband, Alan, at Royal Mountain Campground with their dog Kasey.
She was predeceased by her husband Alan J. VanWie. Her parents, grandparents, and adopted parents Rufus and Shirley Rose, brother, David Rose, sister, Susan Reid and nephews Aaron and Christopher Reid, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She is survived by her sister, Patricia Berliner of Ocala, FL. Nieces and nephews; Trisha (Theresa) Talbert of Ocala, FL; David (Diana) Rose of Altamont, NY; Annissa (Jim) Clute of Ormond Beach, FL; Meghan (Timothy) Allmon of Lake Como, FL; and Matthew (Jessica) Reid of Palm Coast, FL. Great-nieces and nephews; Collin (Cassidy) Clute of Bunnell, FL; Devyn Clute of Melbourne, FL; Dominic and Alyssa Allmon of Lake Como, FL; Owen Reid of Gloversville, NY; and Great-Great nephew, Charles Clute of Bunnell, FL. Sandy also has a stepbrother, William Bufford Jr.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda, NY. Due to COVID we ask everyone in attendance to please wear a mask and practice social distancing. Arrangements are under the direction of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY.
