Mrs. Eleanor O. Smith, 93 years old, formerly of State Highway 10, Palatine Bridge, New York, died Friday Morning, April 1st, 2011 at the Palatine Nursing Home.
Born on February 11, 1918 in Mayfield, New York, she was the daughter of David L. Olmstead and Helen Woodcock Olmstead. She was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, Class of 1934 and had been a local area resident since 1929, previously residing in Mayfield.
Mrs. Smith was a machine operator in the Gum Department of Life Savers in Canajoharie, retiring in July 1, 1983. She also worked for 10 years at the former Whitbeck's Restaurant in Canajoharie.
She was a member of the Canajoharie United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Smith was Treasurer of W.S.S.C.S, and a member of Canajoharie Senior Citizens. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, spending time with her family, camping and boating.
On September 19, 1936 in Fort Plain, NY, she was married to Peter E. Smith. He preceded her in death on March 12, 1978. She was also predeceased by a son, Peter Neale Smith on March 7, 1998; 2 sisters, Margaret LeRoy on March 13, 2006 and Helen Jean Ciani on October 6, 2010 ; and a granddaughter, K.C. Smith Congdon May 3, 2009.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Judith S. & Douglas Montanye of Canajoharie, NY; sons, Richard E. & Betsy Smith of Argyle, NY, David L. & Catherine Smith of Canajoharie, NY; sister, Marion Cole of St. Johnsville, NY; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 6 PM at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, April 6th from 4-6 PM at Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. Burial will take place in St. Peter's & Paul's Cemetery, Canajoharie, NY at a later date.
