Mr. George L. Capece, Sr., 74, of Orchard Street, Fort Plain, New York, died Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.
Born on April 18, 1937 in St. Johnsville, NY, he was the son of Louis R. Capece, Sr. and Olga J. George Capece. He attended St. Johnsville schools and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Capece was the owner and operator of Capece's Deli in Fort Plain, retiring in 1994. He was famous for his cheesecakes.
George served in the United States Navy from 1954-58 as a cook on USS Newman K. Perry. He attended many ports of call, staying with the ship for 3 years.
He was of Catholic faith.
Mr. Capece was very active in Veteran's affairs. He was an advocate for Veteran's rights and benefits, assisting many area Veterans with their Veteran affairs. He was the current commander of the Fort Plain American Legion Post #554, a position he held for many years. George was also a member of the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post #3275.
He enjoyed collecting antique carnival glass with his wife.
In 1960 George was married to Gail Rosecrans. She preceded him in death in 1994. He was also predeceased by his father October 29, 2003.
Mr. Capece is survived by his mother, Olga J. Capece of Fort Plain, NY; 2 sons, George L. Capece, Jr. of Fort Plain, NY, Patrick Capece of Utica, NY; 2 brothers, Louis "Rusty" Capece, Jr. of Fort Plain, NY, Ronald D. Capece of Fort Plain, NY; granddaughter, Jacqueline Capece of Fort Plain, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will enjoy the company of friends on Friday, October 21, 2011 from 10:00-11:00am at the Fort Plain American Legion Post #554, Webster Street, Fort Plain with a Memorial Service following at 11:00am. Burial will take place in West St. Johnsville Cemetery at a later date.
