Obituary of Vincent M. Edick

Mr. Vincent "Gene" M. Edick, 94, of Reed Street, Canajoharie, New York, died Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Palatine Nursing Home. Born on December 8, 1917 in Springfield Center, NY, he was the son of Haswell Edick and Evelyn Head Edick. He was a graduate of VanHornesville Central School, class of 1937. Gene had been a resident of Canajoharie since 1964, previously residing in Cherry Valley for 20 years. Mr. Edick was most recently employed as a L.P. Serviceman for Agway Petroleum, retiring in 1981 after 21 years of service. Prior to working for Agway, he worked at the former Briggs Lumber Co. and the former Glennsfoot Farm Milk Bottling Plant. He was a member of the Canajoharie Reformed Church. Gene was a member of the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, serving as Dispatcher for over 25 years. He was a past member of the Cherry Valley Fire Department and the Cross Trails Square Dancing group. Gene also enjoyed woodworking and was a avid golfer. On October 1, 1944 in Cherry Valley, NY, Gene was married to Grace Bellinger. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2005. At the time of his wife's death the couple had celebrated 60 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Grace Ering and Marjorie Moore, as well as his brother Arthur Edick. Mr. Edick is survived by his son, David C. and his wife, Pat Edick of Canajoharie, NY; daughter, Kathy Spidell of Phoenix, AZ; granddaughter, Juliet and her husband, Mark Florian of Fort Plain, NY; 3 grandsons, Martin and his wife, Jodi Spidell, Steven and his wife, Sue Spidell, Bryan Spidell all of Phoenix, AZ; 2 great-granddaughters, Savannah and Alexis Grace Spidell of Phoenix, AZ; and one great-grandson, Zander Spidell; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 11:00am at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 with Rev. Miriam Barnes officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 from 4pm to 7pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.
