Obituary of Jean Brearey

Mrs. Jean B. Brearey, 86, of Prospect Street, Nelliston, New York, died Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at her home with her family by her side.
Born on January 14, 1926 in Quoque, Long Island, NY, she was the daughter of Herbert Bedson and Helen Mitchell Bedson. She was a graduate of Center Moriches High School, class of 1944 and attended Ithaca College.
Mrs. Brearey was employed at SUNY Cortland in the Video Department, then as Registrar for the Boy Scouts in Cortland. She also worked at the Latham Auto Dealership in Watertown and retired from Central National Bank as a clerk in the Controller's Office in 1988.
She has been a local area resident since 1972, previously residing in Sackets Harbor, NY.
Mrs. Brearey was a member of the Reformed Church of Fort Plain.
She was a member of the Otsquago Chapter #297 Order of the Eastern Star of Fort Plain. She was an EMT until she was 78 and was a member of the Board of Directors of Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, as well as a dispatcher.
On June 11, 1950 in Remsenburg, Long Island, Jean married Robert Brearey. He preceded her in death on October 20, 2003. She was also predeceased by a grandson, Thomas Brearey and brother Reginald M. Bedson.
Mrs. Brearey is survived by her 3 daughters, Susan B. (Henno) Karmo of Guilderland, NY, Cynthia C. (Timothy) Summerfield of Nelliston, NY, Pamela J. (Terry) Vedder of Amsterdam, NY; son, Robert R. Brearey of Oakdale MN; 5 granddaughters, Meghann (Sean) Azlin, Krista Karmo, Anneli Karmo, Rachel Pakenas, Sarah Brearey; 1 grandson, Matthew Summerfield; sister-in-law, Ruth Bedson of CT; good friend, Gerry Maring; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 10:00am at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY, with Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, January 22, 2012 from 2:00-5:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery at a later date.
