Mrs. Virginia V. "Vin" Stortecky, 79, of Roof Street, Fort Plain, New York died, Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown surrounded by her loving family.
Born on May 10, 1933 in Johnstown, NY, she was the daughter of Cornelius VanDerwerken and Martha Terry VanDerwerken. She was a graduate of Johnstown High School, class of 1951 and a graduate of Plattsburgh Teaching College, class of 1955. She had been a resident of the Fort Plain area since 1956.
Mrs. Stortecky was a Home Economics Teacher for Fort Plain Central School until her retirement in 2005. She began her teaching career in Guilderland in 1955, and then taught for Canajoharie School before finishing her teaching career at Fort Plain.
Her family was her life. She thought the world of her students and her educational community. She took great pleasure in cooking and reading.
On October 13, 1956 in Johnstown, NY, Virginia was married to Dr. Alfred E. Stortecky. He preceded her in death on January 24, 2004.
Mrs. Stortecky is survived by her 4 children, Son & Daughter-in-law, Stephen J. and Sandy Stortecky of Fort Plain, NY, Daughter & Son-in-law, Lisa A. and James Petty of Fort Plain, NY, Son & Daughter-in-law, James T. and Shelby Stortecky of Palatine Bridge, NY, Daughter, MaryBeth Stortecky of Gulf Port, FL; 6 Grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Stortecky, Brendan, Patrick and Terence Petty, Dashiel Stortecky; Sister and Brother-in-law, Susan and Daniel Melita of TN; Nephews, Kevin Melita, Matt Melita; Niece, Kris Hopkins.
The Office of the Burial of the Dead will be celebrated on Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 26 Moyer Street, Canajoharie with the Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 10:00am. Arrangements are entrusted to Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317.
