Mrs. Norma M. Cottrell-Alter, 90, formerly of Arkell Hall, Canajoharie, New York died Friday, November 2, 2012 at St. Johnsville Nursing Home following a brief illness.
Born on August 9, 1922 in Sidney, NY, she was the daughter of Gilbert C. Cottrell and Esther Tryon Cottrell. She was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, class of 1940. She also attended Albany Business College and Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater. Norma had been a local area resident for over 50 years.
Mrs. Cottrell-Alter was employed as an Administrative Assistant to the President of the former Central National Bank in Canajoharie, NY for over 28 years, retiring in 1987.
She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Naval Women's Reserve.
Mrs. Cottrell-Alter was of Roman Catholic faith.
She was a former member of the Canajoharie Country Club and the Ladies Inter County Golf Association. She was a member of the Canajoharie Seniors and of the American Legion Smith-Shultz Post #222 of Canajoharie. Mrs. Cottrell-Alter enjoyed bowling and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees.
Mrs. Cottrell-Alter is survived by her daughter, Judith Anne and her husband, Leonard Horender of Fort Plain, NY; son, Louis J. Sierra, Jr. and his wife, Sandra of Canajoharie, NY; 3 granddaughters, Heather and Mark Rubeo, Wendy and Chris Scarlett, Jenna Sierra; 2 grandsons, Philip and Erin Horender, Connor Sierra; 2 great-grandchildren, Amanda Rubeo, Jonathan Rubeo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 11:30am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain with Father Dennis Murphy officiating. Burial will take place at Cobleskill Rural Cemetery at the convenience of the family with Military Honors at graveside by the US Navy.
