Mr. Emerson Giovannone, 88, of Staley Road, Palatine Bridge, New York died Friday, May 24, 2013 at St. Johnsville Rehab & Nursing Center.
Born on November 26, 1924 in Fort Plain, NY, he was the son of Alessandro Giovannone and Vincenza I'acovangelo Giovannone. He attended Fort Plain High School, until his enlistment in the US Navy and was a lifetime area resident.
Mr. Giovannone retired from CSX in Albany, working for many years as a Rail Inspector.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
He was a World War II Veteran of the US Navy, with a rank of Seaman First Class.
Mr. Giovannone was a member of the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post #3275 as well as the Memorial Squad, the Fort Plain American Legion Post #554, Loyal Order of the Moose #853 of Canajoharie. He was very proud of having his pilot's license.
On March 21, 1948 Emerson was married to Mary S. Chest. She preceded him in death on December 29, 2003. He was also predeceased by a sister, Gilda Mucha and his half-brothers, Anselmo "Angelo" Giovannone and John Giovannone.
Mr. Giovannone is survived by his 2 sons, Emery T. Giovannone of Fort Plain, NY, David J. and Lorie Giovannone of St. Johnsville, NY; 2 sisters, Doris (Loring) Dutcher of Fort Plain, NY, Gloria Friello of California; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as his special caregiver, Darlene Weed of Fort Plain, NY.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 10:00am at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with Father Dennis Murphy officiating with military honors being offered at the funeral home by the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post, #3275, Memorial Squad. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from 4-7pm at the funeral home.
