It was June of 1949 when our family moved across the "Field of Dreams" from Frank & Lottie Kretser and their large family. I believe they had about 11 or 12 children? Why do I call it "Field of Dreams ?" We played baseball in that field when we could coax "Muley",
their beautiful Holstein cow, to move out of the field of play. We were the "New Turnpike Yankees" and what a group of players we were. We had the Kretsers,Billy,Roger and "Little Gary",the Conrad's,Garry & Larry, the Darrach's, Nelson and Victor, the Saltsmen's, Duane & Terry, Clark"Dutch" Able, and we Horning boy's,Richard "Dickie",Wayne and of
course, myself,Larry. Usually we'd ask Earl Cotton,Arnold or Melvin Kretser to be the umpire and once in awhile,Frank their Dad or my Dad Bev Horning. Those "Umps" never made a good call !! The families would come out to watch us play almost every time. When it got dark,we'd play hide N' seek until bed time,we were always out doors !
All of us kids went to the one room school house where Leo Popp, our teacher, would
teach us all bout life and it's hazzard's. In the winter we'd sleigh ride down Clarence Gray's hill onto the ice and stop short of the barb'ed wire fence. We would also build snow forts and have snow ball fights until one of us got hit too hard and ran home crying (Sissy's), game over.!! If we could scrape up rnough money,we'd go outto Sammonsville and get a 3 gallon tub of ice cream.( I scream, you scream, we all screamed for ice cream).I wouldn't trade those days for any thing .Bev,Geraldine and Carol Conrad would be on the sidelines yelling at us to come play house ?? NO NO NO!!
We will always remember the Kretser family fondly, they were the focal point of our existence on the" New Turnpike" I hope this gives all of you a little snapshot of how it was to grow up in the 40's & 50's. Without that background,I could've been a juvenile delinquint !! God Bless you Billie,we'll see you on that "Field of dreams" in heaven.May you rest in peace forever. Your out fielder,Larry Horning
