Obituary of Leigh W. Fuller

Mr. Leigh W. Fuller, 88, of Abeling Street, Canajoharie, New York died Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at St. Mary's Healthcare of Amsterdam. Born on June 11, 1925 in Middletown, NY, he was the son of Clifford Fuller and Florence Gray Fuller. He was a graduate of Middletown High School, class of 1943 and also attended Orange County Community College. He had been a resident of Canajoharie since 1958, previously residing in Middletown. Mr. Fuller was a NYS Serviceman for the NYS Thruway Authority for 20 years. Previously he served as Postmaster at Middletown Post Office and worked in the Mental Hygiene Department for Middletown State Hospital for 8 years. Leigh was the Proprietor of the Mohawk Valley Car Wash in Fort Plain and Owner of the former Village Shoe Shop in Canajoharie. Mr. Fuller served in the US Air force for 3 years. He was a POW, rescued by General Patton in Moosebury. He was the past Mayor of the Village of Canajoharie from 2007-2011 and a Judge for the Town of Canajoharie for 27 years. Mr. Fuller was a member of St. John's & St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie and Trinity Lutheran Church in Stone Arabia. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed golfing at the Canajoharie Country Club, Past President of the Fort Rensselaer Club, 2nd Agent of Albany Chapter for POW's, an avid gardener and bowler. On September 19, 1948 in Middletown, NY, Leigh was married to Mildred L. DeGroat. Together they celebrated over 65 years of marriage. He is predeceased by his brother, Harry Fuller. Mr. Fuller is survived by his wife, Mildred L. Fuller of Canajoharie, NY; son, Gary & JoAnn Fuller of Canajoharie, NY; daughter, Donna L. & Gary Kline of North Syracuse, NY; sister-in-law, Jacqueline Fuller of FL; grandsons, Leigh Kline of MO, J. Regan Kline of Manassas, VA, Chad Smith of TN; granddaughter, Amber Fuller of Canajoharie, NY;7 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 3:00pm at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 with Rev. Zachary Labagh officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 1:00-3:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 10:30am at Gerald B. Soloman National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY with Military Honors at Graveside. Contributions in memory of Mr. Leigh W. Fuller may be made to the Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 28, Canajoharie, NY 13317.
