Obituary of Franklin Everett Colvin

Mr. Franklin Everett Colvin, 48, of Center Street, Fort Plain, New York died Wednesday evening, December 11, 2013 at Bassett Healthcare of Cooperstown following a long illness. Born on April 13, 1965 in Little Falls, NY, he was the son of Marilyn Smith Haggerty and George Haggerty. He was a graduate of Fort Plain High School, Class of 1983. He then attended Onondaga Community College, studying music. He was a lifetime resident of Fort Plain. Mr. Colvin had been a longtime employee for Helmont Mills and he enjoyed bartending at various local bars. Most recently he was a self-employed carpenter. Franklin was an active member of the Fort Plain United Methodist Church, holding many offices including Chairman of Trustees of the Church, member of Pastor Parish Administrative Board. He was always working to improve the Church Building and Grounds. Mr. Colvin was an avid Brass player. He also enjoyed playing the guitar. He was in charge of the High School Jazz Band and Marching Band as a student. Most recently he played with the Cooperstown Community Band, thanks to Dr. William Lecates, Franklin's Nephrologists. Franklin was an avid Yankee fan and baseball card collector. Tie-dying was also a hobby of his that he had been teaching his nephew over the past 2 years. Mr. Colvin is survived by his parents, Marilyn Haggerty and George Haggerty ( who died the following day) of Fort Plain, NY; sister, Bonnie Lynn Colvin Tyler of Fort Plain, NY; nephew, Kristopher Colvin; nieces, Jessica Hoffend of Webster, NY and Nicole Twardoz of Amsterdam, NY. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 2:00PM at The Chapel of Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY 13319 with Rev. Alan Griffith officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, December 15, 2013 from 3:00-6:00PM at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery in the Spring. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mr. Franklin E. Colvin may be made to the Fort Plain United Methodist Church, 39 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339.
