Obituary of Noel A. Smith

Mr. Noel A. Smith, 85, of Ames, New York died Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Palatine Nursing Home. He was born at home in the Town of Canajoharie on January 27, 1929. He was a son of Sidney and Faith (McFee) Smith. He was a graduate of Cherry Valley High School and graduated from Cornell University in three years. Mr. Smith worked for Agway in Middleburgh for a couple of years and then went into business himself as a general contractor. He was known in the Ames area as a very competent workman. He never left a job until it was completed to his satisfaction. Noel was an avid gardener and enjoyed all year canned or frozen vegetables from his own garden. He was a longtime member of the Ames Fire Department. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Priscilla (MacEwen) Smith of Ames, NY; nephews, Robert Smith and Richard Smith of Canajoharie, NY, Ronald Smith of Nelliston, NY; sister-in-law, Berniece Smith of Canajoharie; several grand-nieces, grand-nephews and 2 very special pussy cats, Sammy and Sandy. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 from 7-9pm at Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. A graveside service will be held in Ames Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mr. Noel Smith may be made to the Ames Volunteer Fire Department, 595 Latimer Hill Road, Canajoharie, NY 13317 or to the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, Inc., 133 Hilltop Road, Sprakers, NY 12166.
