Obituary of Joseph Fontes

Mr. Joseph Fontes, 93, of Cliff Street, Canajoharie, New York died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the Samuel S. Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany. Born on July 4, 1920 in Fall River, MA, he was the son of Manuel Fontes and Augusta Cunha Fontes. He attended School is Fall River, MA and had been a local area resident for the past 25 years. Mr. Fontes was the owner and operator of Fontes Refrigeration in Massachusetts. He was of Catholic faith. Mr. Fontes was a Veteran of the US Navy, serving during World War II with a rank of Seaman 1st Class. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Massachusetts, Post #5392. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and the local Commander club. Mr. Fontes was predeceased by his wife, Mary Santos Fontes on December 15, 2008. He was also predeceased by his sister, Alice Camara. He is survived by his daughter, JoAnn and Gary Fuller of Canajoharie, NY; sons, William Fontes of Fall River, MA, Robert and Kimberly Berthold of Nelliston, NY; brother, Arthur Fontes of Boston, MA; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY. Burial will take place in Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River, MA at a later date.
