Mr. John Joseph “Murph” Murphy, Sr., 70, of Nellis Road, Fort Plain, New York passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on October 11, 1949 in Little Falls, NY, he was the son of William Murphy, Sr. and June Anderson Murphy. He attended Fort Plain Schools and was a lifetime area resident.
Mr. “Johnny Joe” Murphy worked for Longhorn Trucking starting August 1, 1987 and never retiring. He worked various positions including being a Driver, a job he greatly enjoyed.
He was of Catholic faith.
Murph enjoyed kayaking, camping, 4-wheeling, dirt racing, and watching his grandkids play sports. He was a diehard NASCAR fan.
On January 20, 1979 in Ames, NY, John was married to Teena Mykel. Together they celebrated over 40 years of marriage.
His daughter, Tammy; parents; sister-in-law, Charlotte Warren; and brother-in-law, Dion Battisti predeceased him.
He is survived by his wife, Teena Murphy of Fort Plain, NY; sons, John Murphy, Jr. and his fiancé, Cristina of Schenectady, NY, Donald and Jennifer Murphy of PA, David and Gizem Murphy of Seattle, WA, Charles Murphy and Lindsay Hall of Canajoharie, NY, Patrick Murphy of Fort Plain, NY; daughter, Cassandra and Matt Landry of Fort Plain, NY; sisters, Susan and Bob Boyer of Sammonsville, NY, Shirley and Frank Palmer of Crossville, TN; brother, William and Emma Murphy, Jr. of Fort Plain, NY; sisters-in-law, Carolyn DeGroat of Schenectady, NY, Terri and Wayne Douglas of Fort Plain, NY, Carrie Battisti of Fort Plain, NY; brothers-in-law, Charles and Roxanne Mykel of Stratford, NY, John Mykel and Peg Tyler of Fort Plain, NY, Jack Mykel of Fort Plain, NY; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Helen Mykel of Fort Plain, NY; 11 grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Poppy”, Jordan, Mandala, Chantala, Abby, Owin, Sarahbeth, Gabrielle, Eva, Karla, Payton, Caren; 2 great-grandchildren, August and Alaya Murphy; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; and his beloved dogs, Lilly, Lucy, and Star.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 16 at 2:00PM at the Smith H.C. Benefit Club, 538 Crum Creek Road, St. Johnsville, NY 13752. In honor of Murph the family is requesting everyone attending wear casual clothing. Inurnment will take place in the spring at Fort Plain Cemetery.
