Obituary of Bernice Jane Smith

Mrs. Bernice Jane Smith, 88, wife of Donald S. Smith, who died February 18, 2001, passed on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Palatine Nursing Home.
Born on October 14, 1925 in Currytown, NY, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Loretta Kennedy Monk. She graduated from Fultonville High School in 1943. Bernice married Donald Smith March 20, 1948, celebrating over 50 years of marriage. They lived and operated their family farm from 1965 until 1985, when they sold the farm in May and moved to Ames.
Mrs. Smith worked for Beechnut, Lifesavers, Canajoharie School Cafeteria, Fulcare Health Agency, and also did private care for the elderly in their homes.
Mrs. Smith was a member of many organizations throughout her life which included serving as a member and holding various positions within the organizations; including three different 4H Clubs in Montgomery County, also a former member of Glen Grange, Bowman Creek Grange, Seebers Lane, Montgomery County Pomona and New York State Granges, Montgomery County Farm Bureau, Montgomery County Extension, Buel Presbyterian Church, and TOPS #973 Canajoharie.
Mrs. Smith is survived by three sons, Robert S. Smith of Canajoharie, NY, Ronald J. Smith of Nelliston, NY, Richard D. Smith and his wife, Gertrude of Canajoharie, NY; five grandchildren, Chauncey Smith, Michelle (Smith) Chevalier, Wendy Christman, Kristy Smith, Scott Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua Christman, Justin Christman, Ashley Vooris, A.J. Vooris, Kiah Smith, Lilyana Chevalier, Ryker Chevalier; sister, Beulah and husband, Brad Flint; brothers, Carl Monk, Clifford Monk and wife, Roseann; sister-in-law, Priscilla Smith; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and aunts.
In addition to her husband, Bernice was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Marilyn L. Smith.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 10:00 am at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, August 8, 2014 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Ames Cemetery.
