Mrs. Dorothea S. Wohlgemuth, 100, of Canajoharie, New York, passed away peacefully early Saturday, March 28, 2015.
Born on March 5, 1915 in Little Falls, NY, she was the daughter of Daniel Sullivan and Blanche Leigh Sullivan. She was a graduate of Dolgeville Central School and of Brockport State and Buffalo State College, where she received her Bachelor's degree in education. Mrs. Wohlgemuth had been a resident of the Canajoharie area since 1941, previously residing in St. Johnsville and Dolgeville.
Mrs. Wohlgemuth taught Elementary education for St. Johnsville Central School and Canajoharie Central School until her retirement in 1974.
During World War II she served as a Civil Defense Aircraft Observer.
Mrs. Wohlgemuth was a communicant of the former St. Peter's & Paul's Catholic Church of Canajoharie and was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain. She was also a member of the Altar Rosary Society of the former St. Peter's & Paul's Catholic Church.
Dorothea was a former leader for the Girl Scouts in Canajoharie. She was a member of both the Colonial Club in Canajoharie and the Palatine Literary Society. She was an avid bridge player.
On July 26, 1941 in Dolgeville, NY, Dorothea was married to Karl Alfred Wohlgemuth. He preceded her in death on December 20, 2000. Her brother and sister-in-law, Nicholas L. and Marjorie Sullivan and sister, Louise Callard, also predeceased her.
Mrs. Wohlgemuth is survived by her son, Richard D. and Sylvia Wohlgemuth of Canajoharie, NY; granddaughter, Ellee Fichthorn of Canajoharie, NY; grandson, Daniel and Rebecca Wohlgemuth of Elizabethtown, KY; great-granddaughters, Meg Wohlgemuth, Jackie Wohlgemuth, Sarah Anne Wohlgemuth, all of Elizabethtown, KY, Avery Fichthorn of Canajoharie, NY; nephews, John Callard and family of Fairport, NY, Nick Sullivan of Raleigh, NC.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 10:00am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 from 3:00-7:00pm at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery at a later date.
