Obituary of Mary E. Koval

Mrs. Mary E. Koval, 92, of Brookmans Corners Road, Fort Plain, New York passed away peacefully after a long and happy life, Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Palatine Nursing Home. Born on February 1, 1923 in the Town of Minden, NY, she was the daughter of Arthur Homkey and Roseada Cook Homkey. She was a graduate of Fort Plain High School, Class of 1940 and was a graduate of Oneonta State Teacher's College, Class of 1945. She was a lifetime area resident. Mrs. Koval taught school at Bainbridge, NY for 5 years then went to St. Johnsville Central School in 1957, retiring in 1982 from teaching 6th grade. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fort Plain, NY. Mrs. Koval was a member of the former Otsago Grange, and the Retired Teacher's Association. She hosted foreign exchange teachers and loved cooking, teaching, and raising her family. On November 18, 1950 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fort Plain, Mary was married to Russell Koval. He preceded her in death on May 10, 1985. Her 3 brothers, Richard, Earl, and Arthur, Jr. also predeceased her. Mrs. Koval is survived by her 2 sons, Gary Koval of Fort Plain, NY, Michael Koval of Marion, NY; 3 daughters, Nadine Powylan of Town of Root, NY, Elizabeth Rutland of Kissimmee, FL, Carolyn Koval of Fort Plain, NY; sister, Gladys Holtz of Palatine Bridge, NY; 4 grandchildren, Kirsten Tarica, Kyra Romanello, Ethan Koval, Rosaeda Koval; 2 great-grandchildren, Booker Tarica, Tabitha Romanello; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 1:00pm at The Chapel of Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Burial will take place at Fort Plain Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mrs. Mary Koval may be made to the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, Inc., 133 Hilltop Road, Sprakers, NY 12166 or to the Fort Plain Free Library, Willett Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339.
