It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jerry Stockwell, who departed this life peacefully. Jerry dedicated over twenty years of his life to serving the Amsterdam Police Department, where he was known for his unwavering commitment to public safety and the community. He retired in December of 1993, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, dedication, and compassion.

During his distinguished career, Jerry was instrumental in making numerous drug arrests in Amsterdam and the surrounding areas. His work often took him undercover, where he cleverly concealed his identity behind a large beard, remaining unrecognized even by his closest friends. This dedication to his role exemplified Jerry's professionalism and commitment to protecting the community.

Beyond his law enforcement duties, Jerry was a gentle giant who brought warmth and kindness to all who knew him. He built lasting friendships with colleagues from other agencies, earning the admiration and respect of his peers. Jerry's approachable nature and big-hearted personality made him beloved by many, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Dietra Stockwell; stepchildren, Scott, Rob, Jake, and Merrily; he was also an uncle to many, and had many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

His wife, Kathleen Stockwell, his brother Robert Barker, and his sister Joan Wells predeceased him.  

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire Amsterdam community.

The family will receive family and friends from 10:00 AM- 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 7th, 2026, at the Houghtaling and Hanley Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. A Funeral Service will follow at 12:00 noon. 

Burial will take place at Maple Ave. Cemetery in the Spring. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ayres Animal Shelter, 133 Hilltop Rd, Sprakers, NY 12166, reflecting Jerry's spirit of service and community support and his love of animals.

Rest in peace, Jerry. Your courage, kindness, and laughter will never be forgotten.
