Obituary for Rocco Thomas Mancini Jr.
Rocco Thomas Mancini Jr., 86, of Palatine Bridge, NY, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 14, 1940, to Mary and Rocco Mancini Sr., it seemed only fitting that he entered the world on Valentine’s Day, a man whose heart was big enough for everyone who knew him.
Rocco joined his siblings, Alfonso, Ralph, and Mary Elizabeth, immediately becoming the family’s beloved baby brother, affectionately known as “Brother” for the rest of his life. He was raised in a proud first-generation Italian-American family, a heritage he cherished deeply.
He grew up on West Grand Street in a home that was half family residence and half family business; the Barber Shop and grocery store operated by his parents. Summers were spent at their family camp in Caroga Lake, where he made lifelong memories and stories he would retell for decades.
A 1959 graduate of Canajoharie High School, Rocco was voted Best Dressed and was a three-sport athlete excelling in football, basketball, and track. He later attended Syracuse Barber School and began what would become a 64-year career as a barber, working side by side with his father before continuing the business on his own well into his eighties. His beloved Barber Shop in Palatine Bridge was more than a business; it was the heart of the community. It was often said that if Rocco didn’t know about it, it didn’t happen. With his spinning barber pole, box of lollipops for children, and stories that flowed as freely as conversation, he became the unofficial mayor of the village.
Rocco also served proudly as a drill sergeant in the Army Reserves, a role that reflected his discipline, strength, and leadership. Throughout his life, he was known for his unmatched work ethic. In addition to running the Barber Shop, he worked for the Canajoharie School District, driving buses for 42 years, and operated a successful snowplowing business for over three decades. His tireless dedication provided a beautiful life for his family.
On November 5, 1966, he married the love of his life, Teresa, beginning a lifelong journey of love, partnership, and devotion. Together, they raised three children in Palatine Bridge, the only place Rocco ever wanted to call home. He often said there was no better view outside his living room window than the Cherry Valley Mountains.
Rocco found joy in simple pleasures: coffee at Stewart’s, Saturday nights at Fonda Speedway, scratch-off lottery tickets, snowmobiling on his beloved Arctic Cat, and visiting with everyone. Quick stops regularly turned into hour-long discussions, and he wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Above all else, Rocco’s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished “Papa”. Rocco is survived by his wife Teresa, his son, Mark (Arianne) and their children Anthony, Roman & Enzo, daughter, Michele (Jason Nare) and their children Francesca, Joseph, & Charlotte, and daughter Lisa (Chad Glauser) and their children Sophia & Samuel. He is also survived by his sister, Mary-Elizabeth Mancini, and several nieces and nephews.
Rocco Mancini Jr. leaves behind a life well lived, rich in purpose, pride, and love. Though our hearts are heavy, the depth of our grief is a testament to the extraordinary love he gave so freely. Forever missed. Forever loved. And forever our favorite Valentine.
