Alton R. Mahr Obituary

Alton Roger Mahr, Sr., 85, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025. He was born on March 22, 1940, in the Town of Root, Canajoharie, New York.

Alton lived a full and joyful life. Over the years, he worked as a farmer and a mailman, and in his free time was an avid bowler and softball pitcher—a passion he enjoyed for more than 45 years. He was known for his gentle spirit, kind heart, and wonderful sense of humor. Alton had a special gift for giving everyone he met a unique (and often hilarious) nickname, a reflection of the warmth and fun he brought to every relationship.

When Alton was 19, he gave his heart to Jesus—a decision that shaped the rest of his life. He was a faithful member of The Christian Church of Rural Grove, where he was honored to serve as a trustee.

He was deeply loved by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who led by quiet example and unconditional love.

Alton was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Mahr; his mother, Evelyn (Christman) Mahr; and his siblings, Charles Mahr and Dorothy (Mahr) Booth. He is survived by his beloved wife, Harriet Mahr; his four children, Andrea (Chip) Tripp, Roger (Cheryl) Mahr, Willie (Margaret) Mahr, and Gary (Angela) Mahr; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and his brother Everett Mahr.

A service will be held on November 15, 2025, at Houghtaling & Hanley Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. Viewing at 10:00 a.m., service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Church of Rural Grove in Alton’s memory.
