Merton Cassius Haig Obituary

Mr. Merton Cassius Haig, 95, of Canajoharie, NY, passed away on October 6th, 2025, at the Mt. Valley Hospice House.


He was born on July 31, 1930, in Sharon Springs, NY, the son of Cassius and Laura Eldredge Haig, both of whom predeceased him. 


Mr. Haig graduated from  Sharon Springs High School, 1949.


Mert enlisted in the US Army on January 11, 1951, and was assigned to the 508th Airborne RCT.      


He was a bus driver and transportation coordinator for Canajoharie Schools for many years, retiring in 1992. 


Mert was also a dedicated member of the Ames Vol. Fire Dept for 38 years, and a member of the Sprout Brook Rod and Gun Club.


He was predeceased by his sons, Michael,  Matthew, and Stephen. 


Survivors include his wife of almost 74 years, Catherine "Kitty" Haig, his son, Patrick Haig, his daughter Karla Haig Belcher, and her husband Richard; 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. 


Mert attended Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Fort Plain, NY.


Private services will take place at the chapel of Houghtaling and Hanley Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY, 13317.
