Jeannine M. Bassani, 82, of Reid Street Fort Plain, NY passed away unexpectedly on March 4th, 2025 at St. Mary's Healthcare, Amsterdam, NY.
Jeannine was born at home in Stillwater, NY on February 27, 1943, the daughter of Matthew Mellon, and Constance (Brown) Mellon.
Jeannine graduated from Stillwater High School, Class of 1961. She also attended and graduated from the State University of New York Agricultural & Technical College at Cobleskill,
Class of 1963, with a degree in Early Childhood Development.
On June 13, 1964, Jeannine married Donald Bassani in Stillwater, NY. Together they shared more than 60 years of marriage which they spent in Fort Plain.
Prior to marriage, Jeannine worked at a daycare in Mechanicville, NY. After getting married and moving to Fort Plain, she worked at Luxuray Mills until the birth of her first child. For two decades she worked as a substitute teacher at many area schools, a job she truly loved.
Jeannine attended Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain with her husband Don.
In her spare time, Jeannine enjoyed sewing, oil painting, baking, gardening, canning, making jam, talking to friends about her children and family, traveling down south to see her daughter,
camping, riding her bike, and anything related to Christmas and winter. Many of her paintings were winter landscapes.
Jeannine was a devoted mom who always made sure her children were well cared for and loved. A “Mama Bear”, she would defend her children when necessary but also not shield them
from discipline.
Jeannine was predeceased by her brother Peter Mellon, her father Matthew Mellon, her mother Constance Mellon, and her brother Thomas Mellon.
She is survived by her husband Don Bassani, son Scott Bassani, and his wife Donna, daughter Jodi Bassani, her grand puppy Kubota, as well as several cousins, nephews, and a niece.
The family will be receiving friends and relatives on Friday, March 14, 2025, from 10:00 AM to noon at Houghtaling & Hanley Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317.
A funeral service will follow at noon at the funeral home.
The burial will take place at Fort Plain Cemetery at a later date.
